Once I determined the design direction with the papery, colors and sensibility, the details fell into place. The particular clear blue and cherry red combination is an inspiration, injections of woodland patterns and crisp white keep it light and fresh. The look is full of charm, I hope you enjoy it.

I was eager that this casual summer set up would reflect its lakeside, woodland setting. Often it’s difficult to use boldly patterned linens, especially for a room full of tables, but here it fit perfectly.

A pretty vintage handkerchief provides just the needed inspiration for this summer party I designed for a local garden club. Favor boxes piled in a tower are a fun centerpiece and also hold different surprise gifts for each guest.

Tiny linen corsages can be pinned to a lapel, used as an escort card or simply let you know that “you’re marvelous”.

I loved naming the little candies after local features. The Harriman Bears are, of course, little gummy bears.

I asked the baker to take inspiration from the invitation – she used the menu “lozenge” shape as a motif, and added her own flowers and ribbon. Cherries just had to be featured at this party, given the cherry hankie inspiration.

By dusk the tables were set using my favorite china, silverware and glassware. Custom linens and our arrangements of white hydrangeas, fully in season, completed the look.

Smaller, 'satellite' flower arrangements and a mix of candlelight add interest and texture from every vantage point.

Table numbers are propped up by pierced lanterns that glow beautifully when lit.

The menu card with the familiar oval shape provides the inspiration for the chairbacks I designed and had made. This simple embellishment changes the look of an ordinary folding chair.

A twilight cruise finishes off the night — and a charming little candle that I found shows the way.

The party boat provides the final surprise. I decorated it with beach balls, custom bags and a fully stocked bar.
